Conference: Imagination, Mediation & Manifestation
Imagination, Mediation & Manifestation is a four-day scientific conference organised by Graphic Medicine Europe. It defines its mission as follows:
Graphic medicine is about the use of comics in the healthcare sector, a rapidly growing field. And a wonderful example of cross-fertilisation between art and science.
The first comics that taught people (at first mainly children) how to deal with illness are eighty years old. There are many hundreds now. Scientists not only research the effects of existing books, but also initiate projects themselves. The development fits in with a broader medical trend to not only focus on the body with surgeries and drugs, but also to pay more attention to the psychological effects surrounding disease.
The most in-depth scientific presentations will take place at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, on Wednesday 9 and Thursday 10 September. The other two days take place during Cross Comix Festival in Rotterdam. All conference components there are open to all festival visitors.
