GRID is back. After the successful edition of 2024 Pulp deLuxe and Cross Comix team up to challenge artist to take a shot at one page comics. Ten artists have been selected and their works are currently on display at De Krook in Gent, Belgium
The winning artists are Mo Bourgeois, Helena de Koning, Jos Derckx, Nona Van Effelterre, Brent Bourguignon, Ming Yue, Lisa Ottenburgh, Jari Asselman, Noush and Julija Panova. They were selected by a jury consisting of Lukas Verstraete, Kim Sanders and Marcel Ruijters.
Brent Bourguignon (born 1996) is a Belgian artist and self-proclaimed maximalist. He paints in oils and creates atmospheric, often satirical comics. His work draws inspiration from film, music, architecture, and the everyday.
Helena de Koning (born 2001) is an illustrator and comics artist. She graduated from the HKU University of the Arts Utrecht with a graphic novel about squatting. Her work is fueled by city life, friendship, music, and reality TV. She enjoys drawing buildings and imagining what happens inside. She is currently working on the comic series Boemja & Beessie.
Jari Asselman (born 1999) is a graphic novelist and illustrator with a Master’s degree in Graphic Design from LUCA. He creates illustrations, cartoons, and comics, often inspired by his dreams and everyday absurdity. His work has appeared in among others De Standaard der Letteren, Manus, and TUIGkrant. His book “Gniffelen in ‘t Blauw” (Giggle in Blue) was be published in June 2025.
Jos Derckx (born 1986) is an illustrator and artist from Utrecht. His work is colorful, socially critical, and full of humor and surrealism. He seeks beauty in clean images that encourage introspection. Jos has drawn for Tirade, Vrij Nederland, and Medisch Contact, among others, and lives with his family in Utrecht.
Julija Panova (born 1994) is an artist who works with drawings and narrative forms, from comics and prints to books and murals. Her work is figurative and touches on themes of motherhood, fueled by personal experience. She holds a master’s degree from the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague and lives in Rotterdam.
Lisa Ottenburgh (born 1997) lives and works in Ghent. She holds a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from LUCA Ghent, specializing in illustration. She considers herself primarily an illustrator, but also creates paintings, comics, graphic work, and paper cutouts. Her sketchbooks often serve as the starting point for new work.
Ming Yue (born 1986) is a Chinese illustrator and comics artist. She studied and worked for many years in Tokyo, where she published the zine One Trip. After graduating from LUCA School of Arts in Brussels, she now lives in Belgium. Her work often revolves around recipes and food stories.
Mo Bourgeois (born 1998) is an illustrator, doubter, and self-proclaimed amateur. She studied Japanese Language & Culture and Graphic Storytelling, though her plans for the future remain unclear. She’s chronically dissatisfied with her work, so it’s no wonder this bio came to be.
Nona Van Effelterre (born 2001) studied Film and Graphic Storytelling at LUCA Brussels and lives in Ghent. She enjoys drawing deer, creating comics, and animating. Her work is playful and energetic— possibly thanks to the gallons of coffee she drinks. On Instagram, she’s called no.nee.na, which means “no” three times, though you often get a “yes.”
Noush (born 2003) lives and works in her small art studio in Rotterdam. Her work stems from emotions, experiences, and relationships, which she depicts in worlds far removed from our own. She explores what hurts, what heals, and what gives purpose. She creates comics and zines, and dreams of writing her own graphic novel.
