Pet or Pest is a collaboration between three comic artists and one author, initiated by Drawing the Times, a platform for graphic journalism. In this talk the authors present the background of the story that is told at the festival expo.

Why do we feel the urge to cuddle and dress up some animal species, while we view others as dirty, dispensable pests? In three graphic stories the artists examine three animal species who, for better or worse, are living among us human animals: the pigeon, the rat and the ring-necked parakeet.

How do these urban animals adapt to human activities within an urban infrastructure, and how does their behaviour influence the way urban citizens perceive and respond to these animals – both in the media and in everyday life?
